Traffic Advisory: Intersection Closures on Morena Boulevard Begin Feb. 29

The City of San Diego is issuing a traffic advisory starting this coming weekend in the Morena neighborhood, and it will remain in place over the following four weeks. Pipeline construction work for the City of San Diego’s Pure Water program will require full closures of the intersection of Morena Boulevard and Sherman Street for several days and nights between Feb. 29 and March 25, 2024.

The current construction schedule is as follows:

Feb. 29 to March 4: Full intersection closure from 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 29, to 5 a.m. on Monday, March 4, where detours will be in place. Crews will be working 24 hours per day through the weekend.
March 4-8: Partial intersection closure from 8 p.m. on Monday, March 4, to 5 a.m. on Friday, March 8. Construction is scheduled for four nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Lanes will be limited, but traffic will be maintained through Morena Boulevard and Sherman Street.
March 11-15: Partial intersection closure from 8 p.m. on Monday, March 11, to 5 a.m. on Friday, March 15. Construction is scheduled for four nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Lanes will be limited, but traffic will be maintained through Morena Boulevard and Sherman Street.
March 15-18: Full intersection closure from 5 a.m. on Friday, March 15, to 5 a.m. on Monday, March 18, where detours will be in place. Crews will be working 24 hours per day through the weekend.
March 21-25: Full intersection closure from 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, to 5 a.m. on Monday, March 25, where detours will be in place. Crews will be working 24 hours per day through the weekend.

Traffic control will be maintained to ensure public safety and allow crews a safe space to work. Access for area businesses and residents will be maintained, with detours in place during weekend work.

Commuters are advised to avoid the area if possible or use alternate routes. Drivers and pedestrians should follow all posted signage including posted detours. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.

Construction teams will be installing one 48-inch wastewater pipeline and one 30-inch brine pipeline in a 20-foot-deep trench through the intersection as part of the Pure Water project. This is one of 10 major projects currently underway that will eventually help produce 30 million gallons per day of high-quality purified water, reducing the City’s dependence on imported water.

The largest infrastructure project in San Diego’s history, Pure Water San Diego is the City's phased, multi-year program that will provide nearly half of San Diego's water supply locally by 2035. The Pure Water program will use proven water purification technology to clean recycled water to produce safe, high-quality drinking water. The program offers a cost-effective investment for San Diego's water needs and will provide a reliable, sustainable water supply.
