Sunshine Berardini Field

Project Background

The Sunshine Berardini Field project involves the creation and approval of a General Development Plan (GDP) for the existing park in City Heights. The project is currently funded for the GDP only. As part of the GDP process, we need input from the community.

Scope of Work

This project is to develop a GDP that identifies the following improvements to Sunshine Berardini Field:

Address drainage issues at the canyon entrance.
Provide a lookout area for people with special needs.
Provide trailheads and an information kiosk.
Expand existing parking.
Demolish the existing restroom and replace it with two new restrooms.
Relocate the east playground and parking lot.
Install a new recreation area to the north of the existing parking lot.
Construct new basketball courts and pickleball courts based on community input.
On-street angled parking on Federal Boulevard.
Install as-needed pedestrian and bicycle improvements to connect to adjacent active transportation projects.
Incorporate existing baseball fields into a multi-purpose field.
Construct a new pedestrian bridge that crosses Chollas Creek.
Install sports lighting.
Install a multi-purpose pathway along the northern edge of the park.
Install permanent erosion control, including retaining walls, to stabilize steep slopes to the north of the park.
Provide a connection to the Oak Park Tributary Trail and Parks and Recreation Open Space.
Install accessibility improvements within the park to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Install new landscaping.

The Scope will be explored and finalized during the GDP process through community, Council Office, Parks & Recreation Department and other stakeholder engagement to determine exactly which of these park amenities, and potentially others, will be included.

City hired design consultant: May 2023.
Community workshop process: September 2023 to March 2025.
Parks and Recreation Board approval of GDP: May 2025.
