The Environment Committee meets this week to get an update on the Miramar Landfill and Greenery. San Diego Gas & Electric will also provide an update on utility undergrounding, customer equity, and climate equity.

Item 2 - Miramar Landfill & Greenery Update

The Environmental Services Department is providing an update on the Miramar Landfill.

The Miramar Landfill is the only municipally operated waste management site providing service to 1.4 million residents of the City of San Diego. The Landfill is critical infrastructure supporting the current regional waste management strategy and began as the primary disposal site for the City in 1959 on land leased from the federal government. Approximately 1,500 acres of the area now known as Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar was leased until 2045 by the City of San Diego to primarily support municipal waste disposal needs and environmental stewardship.

Item 3 - SDG&E Presentation on Climate Equity, Customer Equity, and Undergrounding

As a component of the Electric and Gas Franchise agreements, SDG&E and the City of San Diego executed an Energy Cooperation Agreement outlining actions and commitments that furthered the City’s policy and energy objectives. One of these commitments is for SDG&E to offer to present to the appropriate City Council Committee once a year on utility undergrounding, customer equity, and climate equity.
