Valerie Martinez

Intern

Valerie Martinez is a Civic Engagement Intern with the City of San Diego's Commission on Police Practices, where she supports community outreach and public engagement efforts that help strengthen transparency, accountability, and trust between local government and the communities it serves. In her role, she assists with community education initiatives, helps connect residents with information about the Commission's work, and contributes to projects that encourage meaningful civic participation.

Valerie recently graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, with concentrations in Speech, Hearing and Language Sciences, Child Development, and Social Work. Throughout her academic and professional experiences, she has worked with children in educational settings and supported individuals affected by domestic violence. These experiences have shaped her passion for serving others, strengthened her communication and relationship-building skills, and reinforced the importance of listening with empathy and connecting people to the resources they need.

Valerie is passionate about building meaningful relationships within the community and believes that creating trust begins with listening, collaboration, and genuine connection. She is grateful for the opportunity to learn from the Commission's dedicated team while continuing to grow both personally and professionally. As she begins her career in public service, Valerie is committed to making a positive impact and helping create a more informed, engaged, and connected San Diego community.
