The Athenaeum Presents The Talk of the Town: Old Hollywood, Annual Benefit Celebration
Ever dreamed of partying in the glitz and glamour of 1930s Hollywood? After the rousing success of our first Talk of the Town set in the 1920s, we hope you will join us as we celebrate the next decade of Athenaeum history with Old Hollywood sizzle and style.
Get inspired by the vintage glamour of actors, characters, directors, designers, artists, and musicians from 1930s classics like The Wizard of Oz and A Star Is Born. Will you wear the dramatic silks and satins of Jean Harlow and Mae West? Or the refined suits and sweaters of Clark Gable and Cary Grant?
But the party wont be all style and no substance! Dance and swing the night away like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to the sounds of live big band music. Wander through the halls of dazzling art collected by the Athenaeum over the decades. And as you wander, nibble on delicious delicacies or sip on an old fashioned worthy of the finest Old Hollywood hot spots like the Biltmore or the Brown Derby.
Our VIPs will be invited to arrive early and walk the red carpet in style. Each VIP will receive the movie star treatment with exclusive champagne, cocktails, and delicacies. VIPs will also get a first look at the variety of exciting silent auction offerings.

Crystal Pier Outrigger Canoe Race
The Crystal Pier Outrigger Canoe Race is a Southern California Outrigger Racing Association Race, hosted by Hanohano Canoe Club in San Diego, CA. La Jolla Mutt Strut 2024 is a community dog walk and an after-party that will take place on Saturday, May 11 at La Jolla Rec Center from 10 am to 12 noon. Balboa Park Pow Wow
The Balboa Park Pow Wow is a celebration of Native American traditions and culture. The weekend includes traditional drumming, singing, and dancing in beautiful regalia from our elders to our youngest. Fiesta Island Time Trial
Fiesta Island Time Trials is San Diego's original time trial series since 1968, sponsored by San Diego Bicycle Club. Time trials are known as the race of truth, it is the cyclist against the clock. Athletes select category and distance, 3 laps (20km) or 6 laps (40km) around Fiesta Island, juniors will ride one or two laps. Single riders, tandems, and teams all compete for top honors and island records. An awards ceremony will be held after the last athlete finishes. Top six finishers in each category will be eligible to earn points towards series competition. Awards will be given to series winners at the last race of the series.
The race is held rain or shine! There are 150 riders maximum per day, and the event sells out very early. Entry is on a first come, first served basis. Sign up early online at WebScorer.com at a discounted price. Registration the day of the race is at full price. The registration table opens at 6:00 AM and closes at 6:45 AM. First racer is off at 7:00:30 AM subsequent racers start at 30 second intervals.

114th Festa of the Holy Spirit (Parade)
A Catholic Portuguese Celebration. On May 19, 2024 we will have a parade from our facility at 2818 Avenida de Portugal to St. Agnes Church at 1140 Evergreen Street and back from church to our facility following a High Mass.

We start the formation at approximately 12pm on Evergreen Street and move it to Carleton Street, turn right and go straight until Locust Street, turn right and go straight until Avenida de Portugal, turn left and proceed to Scott Street, turn right and go straight until Canon Street and turn left. The majority of the parade will disengage on Canon Street, a portion of the parade (where the royalty is slated) will proceed straight down Avenida de Portugal to our facility. A map is attached. Police and traffic controllers have blocked off some streets and rerouted traffic between 9am and 1pm in a place created by the Police and Traffic Controllers. For the past 13 years the traffic plan has provided a safe, secure venue for participants and attendees. The event sponsor will provide the signs, barricade and security to assure our event continues to be safe and incident free. The parade will have cars, floats, marching bands and children. We have invited several dignitaries from the City of San Diego and Portugal but at this time we do not know who is attending. Vendors: Floats will come from Floatasia Parade Float Company. Elite is our Security Company. Closure of the following streets the entire day Sunday, May 19, 2024 is desired: 1. Shafter Street from Shelter Island Dive to Canon Street 2. Canon Street from Scott Street to Shafter Street from 8am to 2pm. We do know that residents need to be able to reach their homes. 3. Avenida de Portugal closed from Scott Street to Shafter Street the entire day. We need to make arrangements for Taxi Cabs to enter the street from 5pm on to pick up people unable to drive. 4. Scott Street closed from Canon Street to Shelter Island Drive from 8am to 2pm. We have the same understanding that residents will be allowed to reach their homes. We own the property from 2818 to the corner of Shafter Street at the present time and will inform our tenants of our event. |

Memorial Day Ceremony (at Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial)
Our Memorial ceremony will be on Monday, 27th, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. (PDT)
The commemoration will be again hosted by former New Anchor, Marc Bailey. We will have musical performances, a wreath laying, and a missing-man flyby.
Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is one of the most unique veterans' memorials in the Nation and stands high on La Jolla's, Mt. Soledad, offering panoramic views of San Diego County. It is the only memorial that honors veterans, living or deceased, from the Revolutionary War to the current war on terrorism, with an image of the veteran. Close to 6,000 individual veteran tributes, embedded on black granite plaques, are mounted onto the curved walls honoring our United States veterans.

Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics is a fun relay style run designed to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics athletes throughout San Diego County. The "Flame of Hope" will be carried by local law enforcement officers through San Diego. The Torch will begin its journey at the Chula Vista Police Department and will continue through the city of San Diego ending at Carmel Valley Road.
