Background

Mission Bay Park is the largest aquatic park of its kind in the country. It consists of over 4,235 acres in roughly equal parts land and water. Mission Bay boasts 27 miles of shoreline, 19 of which are sandy beaches with eight locations designated as official swimming areas. Project Overview

Over the years, recreational boating, storms and water currents have caused the floor of Mission Bay to become uneven. In order to maintain navigational safety for boats in the bay, the Mission Bay Navigational Safety Dredging Project will dredge the bottom of the bay to restore it to its original survey elevation and then utilize the dredged material to fill other areas within the bay. When the project is finished, the floor of Mission Bay will be more level, thus allowing for safer boat navigation.

This project will dredge approximately 64 acres within Mission Bay, resulting in an estimated 122,000 cubic yards (CY) to 220,850 CY of dredged material. All of the dredged material will be reused in other areas of the bay, including portions of some beaches, so none of the material will be exported from the bay.

The dredging and beach reuse locations are depicted in the project map below. In addition to the dredge work, the scope of this project also includes replanting eelgrass that is impacted by the work.

During construction, construction equipment will be visible on the water and staged on beaches where dredged materials will be reused. Exercise caution when you’re near work zones, and keep a safe distance away from construction equipment at all times.

Project Schedule & Budget

CURRENT WORK SCHEDULE:

-Major dredging operations have been completed. Eelgrass replanting will be taking place throughout the bay in the areas designated on the map above.

-All water vessels must keep a minimum distance of 300 feet away from the construction vessels and their equipment. Vessels should maintain a speed of 5 mph or below when near construction equipment or vessels.

-Beach restoration activities are ongoing, some temporary closures of select beaches will take place to accommodate for the work.
