Examples of face painting used in Chinese Opera. Actors paint their faces to represent the kind of character they are playing. There are four main character types: Shen (male roles), Dan (female roles), Chou (clown roles) and Jin ('painted face' roles). For Jin character roles (males with strong personalities) the actor's entire face is painted with bright colors and bold designs.
