Collections

In order to facilitate public access and improve the research experience, the City Clerk Archives created a "Special Collections" access portal. These subjects include compilations of documents from various record series preserved in the City Archives. In each case, the compiler of the Collection is noted. Each Special Collection has been digitized and made word searchable. The Special Collections are not intended to be complete or all inclusive, since researchers will find many other related records throughout the City Archives.

The armed forces have been a constant presence in San Diego since the Mexican-American War saw the establishment of Fort Stockton in 1846. The first permanent military installation was the Army's New San Diego Barracks, beginning a presence that lasted until Fort Rosecrans on Point Loma was turned over to the U.S. Navy for use as a submarine base, now Naval Base Point Loma, in 1959. Permanent major Navy and Marine Corps installations began development during the early 20th century, with Coronado's North Island becoming a major aviation facility despite humble beginnings in 1911 as a private flying school. The two World Wars saw new bases open throughout the county including the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in 1921 and Camp Pendleton in 1942.
