The Soap Box Derby is a youth-oriented soap box car racing program that was inspired by neighborhood boys racing homemade cars on a Dayton Street in 1933, and the following year the All-American Soap Box Derby was officially held. The 1941 San Diego Derby was sponsored by the Southeastern Exchange Club. It’s been a tradition in San Diego ever since.
