Mayor Jerry Sanders lauded the City's public works professionals during National Public Works Week for winning 20 prestigious local and national awards for various capital improvement projects. "We are proud to receive these awards on behalf of the hundreds of public works professionals whose hard work and dedication carried these projects from conception to completion," Mayor Sanders said. "San Diego is the eighth largest city in this nation. Investment in our infrastructure continues to be a priority."

Thirteen different construction projects received a total of 20 awards for excellence in engineering, design, construction, and project management. Among the most awarded is the Alvarado Water Treatment Plant Upgrade and Expansion which received 6 awards, including the National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies. The last phase of the upgrades, the installation of ozone facilities, concludes the plant's extensive expansion that began in 1994.

The City celebrated National Public Works Week May 15th - May 21st. This week celebrates the thousands of men and women who provide and maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works.

Other award-winning projects include the First Avenue over Maple Canyon Bridge Retrofit and Painting Project, the Ocean Air Community Park, Rancho Peñasquitos Pump Station, and the Garnet Avenue Emergency Storm Drain Replacement Project. The awarding organizations include the American Public Works Association, Construction Management Association of America, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the California Park and Recreation Society.

"We are proud of the significant accomplishments of those who devote their careers to providing public works services to the citizens of San Diego. This is what we do and we do it with pride," said Tony Heinrichs, Director of the Department of Public Works.
