Avenida de la Playa Infrastructure Replacement Project Overview

This project will replace and realign approximately 630 linear feet of existing storm drain main and upgrade the existing outfall structure. New curb ramps will be constructed where needed, and the impacted streets will be resurfaced.

Sewer and Water Group 809 Project Overview

This project will replace, rehabilitate and install approximately 9,150 linear feet of 8-inch, 10-inch, 12-inch and 15-inch sewer main; and approximately 8,000 linear feet of 8-inch water main. The project also includes replacement/installation of sewer manholes, sewer laterals, water valves, water services, fire hydrants, fire services, curb ramps and street resurfacing on impacted streets.

Project Background

These two projects will help bring the existing storm water, sewer, and water delivery system up to current standards, improve system reliability and reduce maintenance requirements. This project meets requirements by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Department of Public Health to replace all aging and deteriorated concrete sewer mains and cast-iron water mains.

By replacing these mains, the City will not only meet the regulatory mandates, but it will also bring these mains up to current City standards and prevent any future sewer spills and stoppages in the area. Due to the undersized storm drains on Avenida De La Playa, frequent flooding occurs, which contributes to pollution in the area and on the adjacent beach. As part of a State designated Area of Special Biological Significance (ASBS) by the California Ocean Plan, pollution and other discharges are prohibited in the waters off La Jolla Shores.
