Aerial view of North Island and Point Loma taken in 1936. Naval Air Station North Island is known as the Birthplace of Naval Aviation. The base was established in November 1917 when Congress passed a Condemnation Act to acquire the 1,232-acre North Island as a permanent military aviation school and base, the first on the West Coast.
