1977 photo of the roller coaster in Belmont Park, then called 'Earthquake' now the 'Giant Dipper'. Built in 1925, the roller coaster was slated for demolition in 1979. In the interest of keeping the bulldozers away, San Diego City Architect Consultant, Anthony Ciani, succeeded in having the Mission Beach Earthquake placed on the National Register of Historic Places in October of 1978. Successful efforts of the Save the Coaster Committee have guarded it from the wrecking ball through the years.
