Mayor Gloria’s Statement On Governor Signing Legislation To Advance Midway District Transformation

SAN DIEGO - Mayor Todd Gloria issued the following statement today after Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bills 344 and 958, legislation that clears a path for the long-awaited transformation of San Diego’s Midway District and the redevelopment of the Sports Arena property:

“San Diegans have waited decades to see the Midway District transformed. With Governor Newsom’s signature on SB 344 and SB 958, we now have greater certainty to move this long-awaited vision forward that will deliver over 4,000 new homes, including 2,000 deed-restricted affordable homes, along with new park space and a new world-class arena.

“These bills preserve the environmental review required under CEQA while providing greater clarity so projects that comply with the law are not tied up for years in unnecessary delay. That allows us to stay focused on what matters most: turning an underused public property into housing, public spaces, and a modern arena that will serve San Diegans for generations.

“I want to thank Governor Newsom for signing these bills, Senator Akilah Weber Pierson and Assemblymember Chris Ward for their leadership in championing them through the Legislature, as well as the members of our San Diego legislative delegation and labor partners who worked to get them across the finish line.

“This is an important step toward turning decades of discussion into action—building thousands of new homes and finally delivering the world-class arena and revitalized Midway District San Diegans have been promised.”
