SAN DIEGO Mayor Todd Gloria issued the following statements today regarding President Joseph R. Bidens first executive orders:

This is leadership. President Bidens Day One executive orders set the tone that the United States will build back better. From revoking many of the past administrations harmful executive orders to tackling COVID-19 head on, President Biden is sending a strong message that our nation will continue the march of progress toward an America that lives up to its promise of equitable opportunity for all of us.

On the COVID-19 response:

State and local governments across the country should rejoice at our country rejoining the World Health Organization and finally having a coordinated Federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic. President Bidens leadership on the national level will more efficiently and effectively help local governments slow the spread and save lives.

On equity:

Every American benefits when we build a more just society. President Bidens initiatives will advance equity for communities who have been underserved, including people of color and Americans with disabilities, LGBTQ+ Americans, religious minorities, and those facing persistent poverty.

On immigration:

The great promise of the United States is that anyone regardless of their background can escape persecution and have the opportunity to thrive. As the mayor of the nations largest border city, I welcome President Bidens immigration proposal to protect Dreamers, revoke harsh and extreme immigration enforcement, and create a more welcoming place for all those who seek the American dream.

On the economy:

The COVID-19 pandemic has been economically devastating for millions of American workers and families. President Bidens orders to extend student loan forbearance as well as the eviction and foreclosure moratoriums will help keep families in their homes and provide a foundation for our recovery.

On the rescinded ban on military service for transgender people:

It was an outrage for the last administration to bar proud Americans from being able to serve their country simply for being transgender. Lifting the ban sends a clear message to our transgender community: we see you for the brave, patriotic citizens you are and will honor your choice to serve with dignity.

On climate change:

Climate change is the biggest existential threat we face as human beings. Rejoining the Paris Agreement and taking key steps to protect our environment, like rescinding the KeystoneXLPipeline permit and investing in sustainable infrastructure to support good, green jobs, are critical to combatting climatechange and ensuring a safe and clean future for our children and grandchildren.
