SAN DIEGO Building on his efforts to diversify city leadership and representation on city boards and commissions to make them more reflective of the people they serve, Mayor Todd Gloria has appointed human rights advocate, community organizer and Somali refugee Ismahan Abdullahi to the San Diego County Water Authority Board.

Ismahan brings a needed voice to the San Diego County Water Authority. Im proud that she will bring her lived experience, passion, and tenacity to advocate for justice and equity to the table as we plan our water future, Mayor Gloria said. I know she will represent the City of San Diego well as the board works to provide a safe, affordable and reliable supply of water for all of us in the region.

Abdullahi currently serves as the Executive Director for the Muslim American Society's Public Affairs and Civic Engagement (MAS-PACE). She is the former Director of Movement and Campaign Strategies at PANA. She has served as a board member in numerous community organizations and institutions, including the Muslim Leadership Council of San Diego and a former steering committee member for Power California. She continues to be engaged in and work on issues that address racial disparities, social injustices, equity and political inclusion.

For too long, communities of color havent had a seat at the table when it comes to making decisions about our biggest regional challenges, Abdullahi said. I am grateful to Mayor Gloria for the opportunity to represent disenfranchised communities and be their voice on the San Diego County Water Authority Board.

Mayor Glorias appointment of Abdullahi was confirmed by the City Council today.

Abdullahi earned her bachelors degree from the University of California San Diego and her masters degree from San Diego State University.
