SAN DIEGO – Mayor Todd Gloria today issued the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s May Revise 2026-2027 budget proposal:

“Cities across California are making real progress in reducing homelessness, and San Diego is proof that when urgency, accountability, and strong local action are paired with reliable state partnership, the results are measurable,” said Mayor Todd Gloria.

“The City of San Diego has now seen two consecutive years of reductions in unsheltered homelessness because of state programs like Homeless Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP), which have helped us expand shelter capacity, connect people on the street to services, and move them into housing.”

“This progress is fragile without sustained commitment from the State. When funding and partnership fall short, cities are forced to scale back programs that are working, putting hard-earned progress on reducing homelessness at risk across California.”

“As budget negotiations continue in Sacramento, I’ll keep working alongside mayors throughout the state to advocate for the long-term, $1 billion annual investment needed to maintain this momentum so cities can continue helping people move off the streets and into housing.”
