SAN DIEGO – A bipartisan coalition of leaders from across San Diego County today expressed its appreciation for the efforts of San Diego’s congressional delegation, which secured $89.3 million for 63 regional community projects in the latest appropriations minibus package for fiscal year 2026.
“San Diego’s congressional delegation delivered for our city and region,” said San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “These federal dollars will improve infrastructure, sustain our homelessness response, and give local agencies added capacity to do the work residents count on.”
This latest minibus appropriations package included projects in appropriations bills covering the departments of Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, Education, Labor, Health and Human Services; and Defense. (Please see the attached complete project list.) In early January, Congress passed appropriations bills for Commerce, Justice, Science, Interior, and Energy and Water, which also included community project funding.
“As federal cuts squeeze the programs counties administer, community project funding helps protect essential services and prevent even deeper local cuts," said San Diego County Chair Terra Lawson-Remer. “I’m grateful for the diligent, focused advocacy from our congressional delegation that shows why fighting for every dollar still matters.”
Since fiscal year 2022, when the federal process for funding community projects was reinstituted, the San Diego delegation has brought home more than $520 million for 210 projects across the San Diego region. The one-time funding for community projects will help fund various government, transit, planning, and nonprofit entities finance infrastructure, library, park, public safety, childcare, and research projects throughout San Diego County.
What others are saying:
“By leveraging state and city resources, we are turning strategic funding into lasting housing opportunities for low-income families,” said Chula Vista Mayor John McCann. “This $500,000 investment will help deliver 75 to 100 affordable homes for Chula Vista families.”
“Congressman Levin has secured transformational support for Oceanside with $28 million in critical infrastructure funding,” said Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez. “The $26 million for the San Luis Rey River Flood Control Project, authorized by congress in 1970, will finally address flooding risks in our community for generations, while also replenishing Oceanside beaches with much-needed sand. Combined with $2 million to help reconstruct the nearly century-old concrete Pier View Bridge, these investments will protect both our residents and the half-million annual visitors to the iconic Oceanside Pier. We are deeply grateful to Congressman Levin and to the entire San Diego congressional delegation for their resolute advocacy and for recognizing that our community's safety and future depend on modern, resilient infrastructure.”
“This is important funding that will improve local parks and make our streets and sidewalks safer,” said San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones. “We appreciate the collaboration of our Congressional delegation to reinvest federal funds in those things that make a real difference in the lives of those we serve.”
“Coronado thanks Congressman Peters and the San Diego congressional delegation for the strong support of our Storm Water Mitigation Project,” said Coronado Mayor John Duncan. “In the face of increasing storms, water infrastructure is Coronado’s strong focus to ensure cleaner water runoff and improved storm water management. Storm water control is not only essential to Coronado but also to the region and national security as Coronado’s roads provide a vital transportation linkage between major military bases and the South Bay.”
“Year after year, our congressional representatives bring back to the San Diego region millions and millions of dollars for incredible projects and programs that directly benefit our cities and our constituents. This year is no exception,” said Solana Beach Mayor Lesa Heebner. “From helping to ensure safe routes to Solana Beach schools to continued investments along our rail corridor – including improved security at our rail stations – this package of community project funding represents a huge investment in Solana Beach for both our residents and our many visitors. I am so grateful for the hard work and support from our congressional leaders, and so proud of the bi-partisan collaboration from across the region that comes together to make these wins for our communities possible.”
“Thanks to the advocacy of our bipartisan congressional delegation, our region will be receiving over $8 million to advance SANDAG projects across the county,” said SANDAG CEO Mario Orso. “This critical federal funding will help increase connectivity, ease congestion, preserve natural resources, and enhance the quality of life for San Diegans.”
“We are deeply grateful to Rep. Peters and the rest of the San Diego Congressional delegation for their leadership in securing funding for the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Station Modernization project at San Diego International Airport,” said Kim Becker, president and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “This investment will strengthen emergency response capabilities, enhance safety, and ensure that our airport continues to meet the highest operational and regulatory standards as our region grows.”
“NCTD is appreciative of our federal partners for this investment in critical transit projects for the region,” said North County Transit District Board Chair Priya Bhat-Patel. “This funding will benefit riders of NCTD’s three major modes of transit – COASTER, SPRINTER and BREEZE – improving safety, security, and the rider experience for our communities.”
“The San Diego Congressional Delegation plays a critical role in advancing infrastructure projects across the region. We are grateful for their support and for helping to ensure timely completion of these improvements,” said Ann Moore, chair of the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. “Two shovel-ready Port of San Diego projects benefit from this funding – upgrades that will improve the cruise passenger experience at our B Street Pier and Broadway Pier cruise ship terminals, and the Marina Way Road realignment project that will improve public access and cargo handling efficiency as envisioned under the recently certified National City Balanced Plan.”
“UC San Diego is deeply grateful for our Congressional representatives’ commitment to the future health, wellbeing, innovation and resilience of the San Diego region,” said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. “Together, these projects exemplify the powerful outcomes that the federal government’s partnership with public research universities achieves for our community and our nation. We are grateful for these opportunities and look forward to expanding these partnerships in support for our region as we move into the future.”
“We are incredibly grateful to our legislators for securing funds that will benefit our greater San Diego region,” said Dr. Hala Madanat, vice president of research and innovation at San Diego State University. “Specifically, these funds will help advance our AI-enabled robotics training center, which will prepare an AI-fluent workforce and foster authentic interactions between humans and humanoid-robots that incorporate emotions, trust, and societal values.”
“The $850,000 in funding for mobile washer and dryer units to support unhoused students will ensure children can come to school wearing clean, laundered clothes. Providing access to this type of service at our schools helps boost student confidence, which helps them excel in the classroom,” said Superintendent Fabi Bagula, Ph.D., of San Diego Unified School District. “We are deeply grateful for the continued advocacy by San Diego’s federal delegation, and especially Congresswoman Sara Jacobs for championing this investment in our schools. Together, we are building stronger schools and brighter futures for San Diego children.”
“Congressmember Juan Vargas has been a consistent champion for responsible, results-driven investments in our community,” said Kris Galicia Brown, president of the Southwestern College Governing Board. “Funding secured for Southwestern College allows us to stretch taxpayer dollars further by lowering utility and maintenance costs while strengthening the infrastructure that supports student learning and uninterrupted instruction. By investing in efficiency and sustainability now, we can reinvest long-term savings back into classrooms, student services, and the educational programs our region relies on – demonstrating both fiscal responsibility and a deep commitment to public education.”
“We are grateful to Rep. Sara Jacobs for championing the Via Las Cumbres Redevelopment project. This project provides lower housing costs for families, strengthens neighborhoods, and helps San Diego build the homes working people need,” said San Diego Housing Commission CEO Lisa Jones. “This partnership is exactly how we make affordability real: by pairing local investments with meaningful federal support.”
