City of San Diego is proud to support our Military and Veterans, and their Families. There is a long and proud history of military service in our city dating as far back as back as the civil war. At the peak of the great depression the military brought infrastructure, jobs, and money to the region, ultimately establishing San Diego as the premier location for Navy and Marine Corps personnel serving in the Pacific Fleet.
Today, the city hosts two Navy, two Marine Corps, and one Coast Guard base (with additional Navy and Marine Corps bases nearby). San Diego is the homeport for nearly 60% of the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet and the premier training location for the Marine Corps. 1/2 of all Marines complete their basic training right here in San Diego, and 1/3 of all active duty Marines call San Diego home at any given time. The military represents more than 1/4 of the San Diego economy, bring skilled and stable civilian jobs along with nearly 100,000 active duty service members, 240,000 veterans, a multitude of military reservists from every branch, and their families. The manpower and resources of our military community represent over 25% of the local economy and have an outsized influence over economic stability and growth in the City of San Diego.
