Fire-Rescue Air Operations Facility, Phase II (Hangars & Apron)

Project Overview

This project provides the addition of prefabricated metal hangar buildings to provide new hangar space and a concrete apron to accommodate five rescue helicopters, parking and shelter for a single Heli-tender and two fueling tender vehicles. The new hangar space will include a hangar support area for maintenance offices, overhaul, avionics and storage rooms.

The project is located on the northeastern corner of Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa.

Budget and Anticipated Schedule

The total project cost is $23,067,922

The City is currently obtaining environmental permits under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) prior to the award of the Design-Build contract. The CEQA Mitigated Negative Declaration was posted on January 19, 2022, and is considered complete. The Draft NEPA Environmental Assessment (EA) is being reviewed by the Federal Aviation Administration and is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2023. The public review period for the Draft EA will take place from April 24 to May 24.
