Diverting Dam - San Diego River for Flume

Download high resolution photo

1887 photo of the San Diego River at the Diverting Dam for San Diego Flume Co. near Lakeside. The flume was 37 miles long, built in 1886-1889. Redwood lumber was brought by boat to San Diego harbor, cut to lengths and loaded on wagons for the trip inland. Trestles carried the flume across valleys, canyons and ravines. The flume's usefulness eventually was replaced with other water sources. There are very few remnants of the old line remaining. The photo was taken by Herve Friend for Douglas Gunn's 1887 book 'Picturesque San Diego'.
