Photo of Old Mission San Diego de Alcala taken from the Olive Garden - the first Franciscan mission in the Las Californias Province, founded on July 16, 1769, by Spanish friar Junipero Serra. In 1775 rebellious Indians burned the mission and martyered Father Luis Jayme. The current church is the fourth to stand on this location. The photo was taken by Herve Friend for Douglas Gunn's 1887 book, 'Picturesque San Diego'.
