2025 Diwali

Alt text: Two figures embrace and look towards gold fireworks. The two figures stand in front of a magenta background embossed with Rangoli designs. Off centered, the banner reads, “Happy Diwali” and just underneath, “The Festival of Lights.”

Diwali, meaning "row of lights" in Sanskrit, is a major cultural event celebrated in San Diego and around the world by Hindu, Sikh and Jain diasporas. The lights represent the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. This holiday holds different meanings for various communities and regions and people typically celebrate with prayer, togetherness, food, fireworks and lights.

Lasting five days, Diwali is typically observed in early autumn and follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. For many, the day after Diwali is also celebrated as the new year and folks spend the day greeting family and friends. San Diego Public Library recognizes Diwali with celebrations, children’s crafts and books.
