Home Energy Efficiency Measures that Can Save you Money
If your AC stops working, consider replacing it with a high-efficiency heat pump that provides both cooling and heating, lowers utility bills, and may qualify for rebates. To get started, contact a licensed contractor to assess your home, compare models with ENERGY STAR® ratings, and ask about available incentives.
While waiting for repair or replacement, save energy by sealing air leaks, using fans, and blocking direct sunlight with shades or curtains.

Home Temperature Settings
- Winter: Set your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day and 55 degrees at night. You'll save 5% on heating costs for every degree you lower your thermostat.
- Summer: Set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your cooling cost.
How much energy does a compact fluorescent light bulb save?
Compact fluorescent lights use about 75% less energy than a comparable incandescent light bulb.
Many outages occur from high energy demand. Learn more about the types of power outages from the California Independent System Operator (ISO).
Before an outage:
During an outage:
- Turn off major appliances (washers and dryers)
- Unplug sensitive electronics (TVs, VCRs, microwaves and computers)
- Leave a few light switches on so you’ll know when power returns
