Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs)

The San Diego Lifeguard Service uses four inflatable rescue boats (IRBs) in their work. These boats are manufactured in New Zealand under the brand name "Arancia". These boats are specifically designed for rescue work with floor mounted footholds and bow mounted handholds to keep the crew in the boat while going through large surf. 30 horsepower outboards give the vessel enough power to operate safely. Prop guards are used to increase safety while operating amongst swimmers and surfers. Only lifeguards who have completed a rigorous training course are allowed to operate IRBs.
