History of the Center and Park
The park land was acquired in 1954, and the recreation center was built in 1960. An official dedication ceremony took place in 1974. The recreation center features a full-size gymnasium, multiple activity and game rooms, kitchen, and office space. Many sports activities take place at the center, including City league play for sports such as basketball and volleyball.
Officer Austin Machitar Memorial Park features a variety of amenities, including the North Clairemont Recreation Center, the Cathy Hopper Clairemont Friendship Center, a playground, basketball and tennis courts, a lighted multipurpose field, and a passive use area for relaxation and casual activities. In addition to its facilities, the park serves as a hub for community engagement, hosting a variety of activities such as special events, carnivals, flag football, soccer, and strength and endurance training programs.
The community park is named for Officer Austin Machitar, who served the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) for over five years. Officer Machitar joined the SDPD in 2019 and was assigned to patrol in the SDPD Northern Division, which serves the Clairemont Community. He served as a Field Training Officer and took an active role in recruiting new officers. Officer Machitar tragically lost his life in the line of duty on August 26, 2024. North Clairemont Community Park was chosen to honor Officer Machitar given the park’s proximity to the accident and his service to the Clairemont Community and Northern Division.
Approval of the park naming after Officer Machitar was approved by the Clairemont Town Council on March 6, 2025, the Clairemont Community Planning Group on March 18, 2025, and the Greater North Clairemont Community Recreation Group on April 16, 2025. The dedication ceremony in honor of Officer Machitar took place on October 26, 2025.
