Cases involving hate crimes and driving under the influence of drugs and hate crime cases are prosecuted by a specialized team of experienced deputies who vertically handle these cases throughout each step of the criminal process. The unit steadfastly protects the rights of crime victims by obtaining restitution orders and making San Diego a safer community for everyone.

The City Attorney handles employment applications only for law students, attorneys, and unclassified management. The City's Personnel Department handles applications for all other legal positions including legal assistants/paralegals, investigators, and legal secretaries. Employees in these allied legal positions, like most city employees, are in the civil service system.
Law students and attorneys hired by the City Attorney are not in the civil service system. They are political appointees who serve as at-will employees.
