Chief of Staff

Michael Simonsen brings over 25 years of political and private industry experience to his role of Councilmember Campillo’s Chief of Staff. He graduated from San Diego State University with a BA in Public Administration and Urban Studies with an emphasis in City Planning. Simonsen is also a LEAD San Diego graduate.

Michael began his career in public service as a Firefighter/Engineer with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection “CAL FIRE”. From there, he transitioned his service from firefighting to politics. After working on two local initiatives, Michael joined the District 6 office as a Council Representative. From there, Michael joined the District 5 office as a Policy Advisor, and soon thereafter joined Councilmember Donna Frye as her first Chief of Staff.

Michael eventually left public service and transitioned professionally into the private sector. He first served as the Director of Public Affairs for Rural/Metro, the predecessor to AMR, for over 11 years. Most recently, he served as the Municipal Relationship Manager for Republic Services.

Michael is a proud father of two daughters, Anneke and Merrell, and a loving husband to his wife Lyndsi.
