SAN DIEGO Continuing his efforts to end chronic homelessness in San Diego, Mayor Todd Gloria announced today that the City will accept nearly $27.5 million from the states Homelessness Housing, Assistance and Prevention (HHAP) grant program.

This new round of support from the state will help us continue to advance our compassionate efforts to end chronic homelessness by connecting unsheltered residents to housing, temporary shelter and supportive services, said Mayor Todd Gloria. I am grateful to Governor Gavin Newsom and our legislative delegation for treating the statewide homelessness crisis with the seriousness required to solve it.

This funding is from Round 3 of the HHAP program. The City has already been awarded nearly $5.5 million of the $27.5 million. The remainder of the grant will be awarded to the City in the summer of 2022. Previously, the City received $22.5 million from Round 1 of HHAP in 2020 and $10.6 million from Round 2 in 2021.

Allowable uses of HHAP funding include creation and operation of permanent housing and shelters, rapid rehousing, coordination of supportive services and regional systems improvements. Ten percent of the funds must be used to support homeless youth, defined as people between the ages of 12 and 24.

Ending widespread homelessness requires coordination among all levels of government, and I appreciate this crucial support from our state leadership and my colleagues on the city council, said Council President Pro Tem Stephen Whitburn, chair of the Councils Land Use and Housing Committee. These funds will advance the Citys rapidly expanding measures to end this crisis, which impacts all San Diegans.

The Land-Use and Housing Committee today approved a series of actions to accept this funding. The full City Council will vote to accept the funding at a later date.
