Children, Families and Caregivers

The Early Learning Center is located at the City Heights/Weingart Library and offers resources, programs and a space for children ages 0-5 and their caregivers. The goal of the center is to provide an environment that would encourage learning through play. Community resources in the center and library include:

  • Early Learning Computer Stations
  • Library and resource center
  • Art & craft activities
  • Outdoor garden
  • Weekly literacy programs (story time and baby sign)
  • Interactive Walls
  • Legos, puzzles, and toys

Early Learning Center Programs

Toddler Tunes & Yoga
Thursdays, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. | City Heights Library

Bring your little ones to learn dance and yoga moves, including some inspired by movies and tv series such as Barbie, Bluey and Trolls. Dance and yoga classes alternate each week.

Baby Sign & Play 
Fridays, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. | City Heights Library

Join us weekly for 30 minutes for songs, stories and sign language followed by 30 minutes of free play and snacks.

Learn through Play

Our Early Learning Center is designed for play. Check out our space. We are open 7 days a week, when the library is open. The center includes a play area for kids ages 0-5. For older kids, Legos, puzzles and other toys can be borrowed at the front desk. FREE activity book, craft kits, are also available to take home. We also have an outdoor patio that families are welcome to use to enjoy snacks or let the kids make some noise! Our outdoor garden space is available for programs and guided play.

With the help from our local community partners, the Early Learning Center provides children and their caregivers additional resources and information, including:

  • Learning through play activities

ABC Mouse for Libraries (SDPL Locations Only)
A fun, educational website that provides online learning activities for 2-6 year olds at preschool, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten levels. Access to a free, limited version is available only from San Diego Public Library locations.

A literacy resource that pairs classic video storybooks with related nonfiction eBooks from Scholastic to build a love of reading and learning.
 
Kanopy Kids logo

Stream educational and enriching videos for children of all ages with the Kanopy app on smartphones, tablets, and computers. *Note: Videos from the Kanopy Kids section will not require any tickets to view

National Geographic Kids
Includes the complete run of the magazine from 2009 to the present, as well as books, videos, and images. High-quality informational texts are available for primary, upper elementary, and middle school English Language Arts, social studies, and science classrooms.

 

The Early Learning Center was made possible with a grant from the California State Library with matching donations for the San Diego Foundation and Price Philanthropies, to serve families and caregivers with young children ages 0-5.
