About Us

Floodplain management was established in the City of San Diego in 1970. Since then, development in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) has been held to a particularly high standard to help protect communities vulnerable to flooding.

Also, the City is an active participant in FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) so that property owners can access subsidized floodplain insurance policies that are affordable to everyone.

Effective Oct. 1, 2023, all NFIP policyholders will begin to receive a 15% discount on their premiums due to the City receiving an impressive Class 7 rating in FEMA’s Community Rating System (CRS) for exceeding the program’s minimum floodplain management standards.
