Floodplain Management

This site was launched on June 9, 2023 in conjunction with the release of our Floodplain Management Standard Operating Procedures and the citywide Floodplain Management Training. We’ll be working over the next few weeks to fully build out this site so that it’s the central place for all things floodplain related for the City of San Diego.

Thanks for your patience, and please continue to visit as more content will become available soon.

About Us

Floodplain management was established in the City of San Diego in 1970. Since then, development in Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs) have been held to a particularly high standard to help protect communities vulnerable to flooding.

Also, the City is an active participant in FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) so that property owners can have access to subsidized floodplain insurance policies that are affordable to everyone.

Effective October 1, 2023, all NFIP policy holders will begin to receive a 15% discount on their premiums as a result of the City receiving an impressive Class 7 rating in FEMA’s Community Rating System (CRS) for exceeding the program’s minimum floodplain management standards.
