Chollas Creek Oak Park Trail
Creating a Safe, Connected and Environmentally Friendly Trail

The Chollas Creek Oak Park Trail project will develop a 2.3-mile pedestrian trail extending from the easternmost portion of Sunshine Berardini Park heading east along Chollas Creek and ending at 54th Street. The orange line in the map below highlights where Chollas Creek Oak Park Trail will be constructed. The trail will enhance safety, connectivity and accessibility for pedestrians while preserving the natural habitat along Chollas Creek.
Chollas Creek is located within the ancestral lands of the Kumeyaay Nation, who continue to carry the legacy and tradition of their ancestors forward. Chollas Creek provided important resources, a reliable source of water and served as a major transportation corridor through the region for the Kumeyaay people. The Oak Park Trail project will seek to explore ways in which Kumeyaay history, stories and tribal knowledge can be incorporated into the project.

Project Overview
The purpose of the project is to create a safe, dedicated and environmentally friendly connection that is welcoming and enjoyable for community members of all age groups and abilities. The pathway will stretch from Sunshine Berardini Park to 54th Street. Key features will include informative kiosks, directional signs, preservation of natural habitat, multiple entrance points for accessibility and two bridges for safe creek crossing.
This project aims to enhance safety by providing a dedicated walking/hiking path to help reduce accidents involving pedestrians. The trail will also support public health by encouraging physical activity and reducing reliance on automobiles, which also furthers the City’s Climate Action Plan goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035. The Oak Park Trail will connect key community destinations such as schools, parks, shopping centers and transit facilities, making it easier for community members to travel safely and efficiently. Additionally, it will protect and enhance natural habitat along Chollas Creek, providing an opportunity for community members to connect with nature while protecting the creek’s sensitive plants and animals.
Oak Park Trail is planned within an environmentally sensitive area, which means certain aspects of the trail—like its general route and width—are shaped by habitat protection guidelines. However, there are opportunities to shape the look and feel of the trail. Community input will help inform the design of features such as signage, landscaping, educational elements and amenities.
The project is funded through the City of San Diego’s Climate Equity Fund, which prioritizes investments in historically underserved communities to advance environmental justice and public health.
