Mira Mesa Epicentre Fact Sheet

(Updated September 2023)

As people from all walks of life join our Mira Mesa community, reviving the vacant Epicentre as a place for diverse programs brings adaptability and balance to both current and future community needs. The County of San Diego’s vision for the facility is a fluid, multi-purpose space proposed to offer programming for all interests and abilities for both school-aged youth and the general public. In addition to providing a community space for teens to engage after hours when schools need to close, the revitalized Epicentre will also have rooms that are available for reservations by groups and individuals during public hours and offer diverse programming for all ages, including free indoor and outdoor activities.

Projected Building Hours

  • Public Hours by Reservation: 7 days a week, 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.
  • Weekday Youth Programming Hours: 3 - 7 p.m.
  • Weekend Youth Programming Hours: 1 - 6 p.m.

County of San Diego Community Feedback & Survey Statistics

As part of the County’s $8 million approval for the Epicentre revitalization and community engagement, more than 1000 surveys have been collected from Mira Mesa residents to date, representing more than 20 stakeholder groups from students to local businesses. According to this feedback, there is a community desire for a public multi-purpose center, and the County of San Diego has developed a design plan for this facility to match the current and future needs of the Mira Mesa community, with options for everyone and a focus on youth. Currently, preferred interior amenities include a lounge area, game tables and consoles, workstations, homework area, music room, fitness equipment, stage with audio and visual equipment, demonstration kitchen, and multi-purpose space. Preferred exterior amenities include central gathering areas, open turf areas, garden areas, and outdoor sports courts.

Feedback continues to always be welcomed. Ongoing outreach occurs continuously at local public events, Mira Mesa group organizations, Mira Mesa schools, and more.   To learn more about community engagement and timelines on the Epicentre, please visit the County Parks & Recreation Department's resources at bit.ly/Epicentre-County-of-San-DiegoMainPage and bit.ly/EpicentreFactSheetCountyOfSanDiego.

City of San Diego Office Background

Epicentre-meeting

The City of San Diego approved a Right of Entry Agreement with the County of San Diego to evaluate the Epicentre building conditions. The terms of the agreement will eventually be brought to the San Diego City Council. In anticipation of that occurring, the Office of Councilmember Kent Lee continues to participate in community outreach, engagement, and to listen to public feedback. Through collaborative efforts between Councilmember Kent Lee’s Office, Mayor Todd Gloria’s Office, Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer's Office, and the County Parks and Recreation Department, community engagement initiatives have been hosted throughout the past few years in Mira Mesa, including presentations, event booths, survey boxes, and over 66,000 mail pieces and surveys sent to date in the Mira Mesa Community Planning Area.

Mira Mesa High School

In acknowledging requests for a larger performing arts & culture venue in Mira Mesa, the City of San Diego, County of San Diego, and San Diego Unified School District support the existing efforts of Mira Mesa High School’s Phase 3 Site Modernization Plan to construct a new Performing Arts & Culture venue for all ages, from students to community groups and people, and for events in Mira Mesa. It is expected to host over 600 seats with the proper equipment and staffing to operate a dedicated performing arts & culture space showcasing homegrown talent while welcoming multi-generational artists and guests. All will be welcome to rent the space to utilize the theatre upon an expected completion date in the future.
