Aquatics Program & Pools

The City of San Diego Park & Recreation Department's Aquatics District offers affordable, year-round programs at 13 locations citywide. All sites offer programming for all ages: Lap and Recreational Swim, Water Fitness, Youth Swim Team, Youth Water Polo, Learn to Swim Classes and swimming pool rental. The City also offers specialized programming and special events: Adaptive Aquatics Program, Learn to Swim for Free, Summer Portable Pool Program, American Red Cross courses, April Pool's Day, Parent and Tot Workshops and school presentations throughout the year. Pool Locations

Recreational and Lap Swimming

Everyone is encouraged to swim during designated swim times in a supervised, unstructured atmosphere.

Summer Portable Pool Program

This program is offered at many recreation centers throughout the City during the summer months. Portable Pools are designed to bring swimming lessons and recreational swim opportunities to communities without permanent pools.

Facility Admission Fees

All persons entering the facility during recreational and lap swimming times must pay the following admission fees:

  • Adults (16 years and older): $4 per visit, $30 for 10 visits or $85 for 30 visits
  • Children/Disabled/Seniors (62 years and older): $2 per visit, $15 for 10 visits or $40 for 30 visits

Pool Rentals

All City pools are available to rent for exclusive or shared use (birthday parties, school activities, athletic teams, company parties, special events and more). Contact your Pool Manager for more information on scheduling and pricing.

Emergency Testing & Safety Checks

All City pool personnel are subject to emergency testing at any time. Patron patience and cooperation during these drills is greatly appreciated. There may also be 10-minute safety checks conducted every half hour or every hour during recreational swim hours.

Learn To Swim Program

At Portable Pools, swimming lessons follow the Learn-to-Swim Program format. These lessons are provided either free or at a reduced rate. They are available to children who are at least 3 feet tall and toilet-trained. Participants may register for these classes at the host recreation centers. Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Portable Pools are not open on registration days.


All programs are led by professional and enthusiastic swim instructors. Swimmers of all ages and abilities will discover that the benefits of aquatic instruction, recreation and fitness are endless.

The City is offering FREE lifeguard tryout prepatory classes. Improve your swimming skills and prepare for the minimum lifeguard skills test. No experience or registration required. Classes will be held the following dates and location:

PDF icon Lifeguard Training Class Information

All participants interested in become a lifeguard will need to have an sdrecconnect.com account prior to attending the tryouts. Minors will need to fill out a liability waiver signed by a parent or guardian in order to participate. Successful tryout participants will be required to taked a mandatory lifeguard training course to receive certification and qualify to become a lifeguard. Cost for the lifeguard training course is $231 and financing and scholarship options are available.
