Governor Gavin Newsom has signed AB 379, legislation co-sponsored by Mayor Gloria, making loitering to purchase sex a misdemeanor and imposing felony penalties for soliciting minors. Residents are reminded to register for trash service or transition to private haulers as Measure B takes effect. The City is committing $15 million in new Bridge to Home funding to accelerate the creation of up to 300 additional affordable homes citywide.

A grant from Price Philanthropies will expand hours and programming, including free summer entry, at the City Heights Swim Center.

Mayor Ends Summer Construction Ban, Advances Balboa Park Plans, and Welcomes New SDPD Recruits

In this week’s "From the Mayor’s Desk" newsletter, Mayor Gloria announced the end of the City’s outdated Summer Moratorium on construction, allowing infrastructure projects to move forward year-round. He also shared a preliminary proposal to implement paid parking in Balboa Park that would fund ongoing park improvements and introduced a $700,000 grant to begin updating the park’s decades-old Master Plan. Plus, the City welcomed 50 new San Diego Police Department recruits and celebrated progress in neighborhood street repairs and marked the start of Pride Week by hanging the Progress Pride Flag from the California Tower in Balboa Park and holding a kickoff event at City Hall.

The City repaired more than 500 miles of streets in FY2025, exceeding its goal and marking its most productive year for road work in a decade. Plans are advancing to redevelop Downtown’s Civic Center core into housing and public spaces, with progress on converting City-owned properties into affordable homes. The Safe Parking Program expanded to nearly 400 spaces, including for oversized vehicles, while enforcement increased to protect beach access. San Diego is also a finalist to host the 2029 Invictus Games, highlighting its proud military heritage.
