Trash Fee Customer Statement Discrepancy Frequently Asked Questions

Last updated on September 23, 2026, 6:40 p.m.

I checked my online County tax statement, and I see what appears to be an incorrect dollar figure for my trash fee. Is this an error?

Yes. A technical error resulted in incorrect figures appearing on the Solid Waste Management Fee line item of some customers’ County property online tax statements for fiscal year 2027. In some cases, the fee appears as higher than the correct amount and in some cases, it appears as lower. The City is aware of the issue and is working to resolve it.

How can I confirm that my trash fee is accurate?

Customers can view their level of service and see the correct statement amount now in the City’s Residential Waste Collection Services Portal at WastePortal.sandiego.gov. County tax statements—which can be found at Treasurer-Tax Collector—are expected to be updated in the coming days.

Will I be expected to pay the amount that appears on my County tax statement?

If your account is affected, and you are seeing an overage, you will not be responsible for paying the incorrect amount. The City is working to correct the issue and will notify affected customers directly. No payment is due at this time. County property tax bills will begin mailing Oct. 1, and the first installment is not due until Nov. 1. The City will provide affected customers with additional information well before that date.

I am seeing what appears to be an undercharge. What should I do?

No action on the part of the customer is required at this time. The City is aware of the issue and is actively working to resolve it.  If you would like to confirm your trash fee, accurate information can be found now in the Residential Waste Collection Services Portal at WastePortal.sandiego.gov.

What action do I need to take at this time?

No action on the part of the customer is required at this time. The City is aware of the issue and is actively working to resolve it.  If you would like to confirm your trash fee, accurate information can be found now in the Residential Waste Collection Services Portal at WastePortal.sandiego.gov.

How many customers are impacted? Does it affect certain parts of the city?

I need assistance setting up a Portal account; what should I do?

Should I submit a Fee Dispute Form?

  • If the amount in the City Portal is correct: No action is needed. You do not need to submit a Fee Dispute Form.
  • If the amount in the City Portal is also incorrect: Please submit a Fee Dispute Form so we can review your account.

I am on a property tax payment plan through the County. What should I do?

The City is working with the County to update the San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector billing system to ensure accounts are accurate prior to bills being issued.

Will this issue be resolved before taxes are due?

County tax bills are mailed in batches starting Oct. 1, and the first payment installment is not due until Nov. 1. The City will communicate with impacted customers and is working closely with the County to correct the error.

I’ve already paid my property taxes; will I get a refund if I paid more than the correct amount for my trash fee?

Yes, the City will work with customers to ensure they receive reimbursement for any overpayment that may occur.
