About the Library

Most San Diego Public Library locations and their bookdrops will be closed Dec. 24, 2025 – Jan. 1, 2026 for Winter Break. During this time, eleven locations and their bookdrops will be open Dec. 26 – 27 and Dec. 29 – 30 (Carmel Valley, Central, City Heights, Linda Vista, Logan Heights, Mira Mesa, Point Loma, Rancho Bernardo, San Ysidro, Skyline Hills and Valencia Park/Malcolm X).

The San Diego Public Library is a popular destination that connects our diverse community to free educational and cultural resources that will enrich their lives. With 6.6 million visitors, the Library is the largest cultural institution in San Diego that offers FREE programming.

    • More than 1.4 million residents, encompasses an area of 342 square miles.
  • Collection:
    • more than 5.3 million books, including e-books and audio-visual materials
    • 1.6 million government documents; and
    • more than 265,295 books in 25 languages other than English

Our Next Chapter

In September 2013, the City opened the state-of-the-art and award-winning San Diego Central Library @ Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common, which better serves our entire region and has put us on the map internationally.
