OliverMcMillan I CAN! Center - Services for Persons with Disabilities
The OliverMcMillan I CAN! Center, located on the first floor of the San Diego Central Library @ Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common, provides services, programs, resources and professional assistance for persons with disabilities in a safe and comfortable environment. Two private study rooms and 16 computers equipped with assistive software, enlarged screens and adjustable-height tables are available to registered users at the OliverMcMillan I CAN! Center. Accessible work stations are also located in selected branches throughout the library system. The Center features ereaders, large print-books, Braille books and other materials, including digital Talking Books for individuals enrolled with the Braille Institute's Library Services.
Assistance is generally available when the Central Library is open. For specific questions about I CAN! services, please contact Matthew Nye, Accessibility Services Librarian ([email protected], (619) 238-6665).
Service Animals Are Welcome at the Library
San Diego Public Library welcomes service animals in all of its facilities. The Library recognizes that service animals assist people with disabilities to deal with the effects of their disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) defines a service animal as "dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities." However, it also states that "the provision of emotional support, well-being, comfort, or companionship does not constitute work or tasks for the purposes of this definition." Service animals are working animals, not pets. Under ADA regulations, staff may ask if an animal is required because of a disability; they can also ask what work or tasks the animal has been trained to perform.
The OliverMcMillan I CAN! Center provides mail delivery service, free-of-charge, to any homebound library customer who is visually impaired.
Your selections of large print books, audio books or braille books will arrive via the U.S. mail in a zippered bag. When finished with the materials, simply return them in the same bag, postage free!
Who qualifies for service? Homebound customers with significant visual impairment: Persons who cannot get out of the house AND who cannot read standard size print, even with glasses (as certified by a competent authority).
