Black Mountain Park Rules


Important:

Trails may include rocky terrain, steep slopes over 30%, and unpaved surfaces. They are not recommended for wheelchairs or hikers with mobility impairments.

You assume all risk when using the park. Exercise caution and be prepared with plenty of drinking water.

Protect and Respect the Park

Thank you for visiting this unique natural area — home to rare plants, wildlife, and sensitive ecosystems. While the park may appear rugged, it is a fragile environment that needs your help to stay protected. Please follow these important guidelines:


Trails & Access

  • Stay on designated trails to avoid damaging habitat and disturbing wildlife.
  • Do not cut switchbacks or trespass onto private land.
  • Motorized vehicles are prohibited on all trails (CVC 38301).
  • Some areas may be closed due to fire or flood risk — please respect all posted closures.

Camping & Fires

  • No overnight camping is allowed [SDMC 63.0102(b)(12)].
  • Open fires are strictly prohibited [SDMC 63.0102(b)(11)].
  • The park is closed from sunset to sunrise.

Alcohol & Glass

  • Alcohol is prohibited in parking lots at all times [SDMC 56.54].
  • No alcohol allowed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in any area [SDMC 56.54].
  • Glass containers are not permitted anywhere in the park [SDMC 63.0102(b)(7)].

Natural & Cultural Resources

  • All plants, animals, and cultural resources are protected. Do not collect, disturb, or damage any natural features [SDMC 63.0102(b)(4)].
  • Hunting is prohibited [SDMC 63.0102(b)(10)].
  • Defacing rocks, structures, or property is prohibited [SDMC 63.0102(b)(5)].

Pets & Wildlife

  • Dogs must be leashed at all times [SDMC 63.0102(b)(2)].
  • Clean up after your pet [SDMC 44.0304.1].
  • Feeding, harassing, or releasing animals is prohibited [SDMC 63.0102(b)(10)].

Trash & Litter

  • Littering or dumping is prohibited and subject to fines [SDMC 63.0102(b)(6)].
  • Pack out what you pack in, or use proper receptacles [SDMC 54.0209].

Safety & Weapons

  • Firearms and all weapons are prohibited [SDMC 63.08].
  • Feeding or harassing wildlife is prohibited [SDMC 63.0102 (b)(10)]. Releasing domestic animals is prohibited. Dogs must be leashed [SDMC 63.0102(b)(2)]. Clean up after your pet [SDMC 44.0304.1].
  • Motorized vehicles are not permitted on trails (CVD 38301).
  • Do not trespass on private land. Do not cut switchbacks. Note: All areas may be closed due to fire or flood hazard. You are responsible for knowing the park rules. If you have any questions regarding park use, please call the City of San Diego park ranger office at (858) 538-8082. PLEASE REMEMBER that you are part of a natural park area. The trails traverse land in its largely natural condition, includes rocks, streams and wildlife. Proceed with caution. The City of San Diego is not liable for injuries. Individuals using the park must assume all risk of injury to person or property.
